We are facing a human rights emergency in this country that demands immediate attention. From many fronts, across different sectors of society and intensified by powerful political forces, the rights of many vulnerable groups are under assault with additional threats looming on the horizon. Eight million Americans are at risk of forcible deportation, including hundreds of thousands of Muslims. The legal protection to the rights of LGBT community is at risk with the new administration. The right for affordable health care is under threat. The rights of African Americans to participate in electoral democracy has been undermined by state policies and possible Congressional investigation into the so-called voter-fraud. And the increasing hostility to women in the political campaigns may be a prelude to a new restrictions regarding access to redress of sexual violence and equal economic opportunity.
