Ph.D, Anthropology, 1978, University of California San Diego
M.A, Anthropology, 1973, University of California San Diego
This is an overview of the nearly two dozen "truth commissions" that have been conducted around the world since 1973, following major atrocities involving human rights violations. The UN (El Salvador) and various NGOs (Rwanda, Paraguay) have sponsored commissions, in addition to new governments investigating their predecessors, such as in post-apartheid South Africa. The bulk of this work is in the complete annotated bibliography of English-language works addressing truth and reconciliation commissions. Also included is analysis of the theoretical problems of truth, justice, reconciliation, democratization and culture. This is a great resource for students and scholars looking for a long list of reading materials!
