Sir, With reference to “Undeclared and undiscussed” (Analysis, October 22): when it comes to drones, America must get its nose out of the roses. Drones may have precision-guided hellfire missiles, but there is always collateral damage. Deaths of children, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and the elderly, and the destruction of infrastructure, dirty the hands of our nation. Is it not self-righteous to be sitting at Langley, or on an Air Force base in the Midwest, out of harm’s way with trigger-happy fingers? Sustainment costs might be arguably low, but the human costs are regrettably high. We may be lessening the number of boots on the ground and curing our fear of the body-bag syndrome, but can we confidently say that there is no connection between wielding our “Godly power” and the soft target attacks on the US and its allies?
