Problem Statement: Over the last twenty years, scholars have produced exciting new understandings of how race permeates politics and society in the United States, moving us past a traditional focus on “multiculturalism” or minority inclusion to better understand how institutions, policies and frameworks are deeply inflected by racialized power. Yet these themes have not always been addressed by the field of conflict analysis and resolution. What obstacles have slowed this absorption? What challenges might a greater attention to race pose to the field more broadly and S-CAR specifically, particularly given the small minority presence on the S-CAR faculty and student body? Do critical histories of racial oppression and colonialism have anything to teach us about how we frame our engagements in the world?
