Speaker Biographies
Dr. Heidi Burgess earned her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Colorado in 1979. She then did postdoctoral work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (where she worked with Larry Susskind and learned about the then very new approach to environmental disputes called "mediation"). She then returned to Colorado and worked for two years at an environmental mediation firm, later forming a public policy consulting firm with her husband, Guy Burgess. In 1988, with support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Guy and Heidi helped establish the University of Colorado Conflict Resolution Consortium (now the Conflict Information Consortium), which they continue to co-direct today. Heidi also teaches in the University of Colorado's Peace and Conflict Studies Program, and the University of Denver Conflict Resolution Program. While she has authored and/or edited several books and many articles, her primary interest and focus of her scholarly work has been the development, writing, and editorial direction of the Consortium's online knowledge base systems, particularly CRInfo, the Conflict Resolution Information Source (www.crinfo.org) and Beyond Intractability--the website of the Intractable Conflict Knowledge Base Project (www.beyondintractability.org).
