Darfur 2009: Toward Breaking the Impasse

Professor Daniel Rothbart will discuss a peace-building initiative currently underway on the conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan. He will summarize events related to a consultation that occurred this past July in Italy where 17 representatives from six resistence movements engaged in the civil war sat together to discuss ways to end the violence. The purpose of this consultation was to open the channels of communication, reconcile differences, foster a better understanding, and promote common ground among the movements as a prelude to future negotiations with the Government of Sudan. But not everything went as planned during the consultation. The twists and turns of the dialogue led to some surprising results.
