Human Rights and Conflict Resolution in Sudan
Sat April 11
4:00-6:00pm
Room 5183, Metropolitan building
The conflict in Darfur, Sudan came to the attention of the international community through an uprising of groups in Darfur in April 2003. Now in its 12th year, although the conflict’s dynamics have shifted, the human rights situation in Darfur continues to deteriorate.
This event will feature speakers for an informal discussion on human rights and conflict analysis in Sudan to better understand the current conflict in Darfur, Nuba Mountain and the Blue Nile. Our guests will connect the importance of human rights and methods of conflict resolution from peace talks to art. The event has been in collaboration with Sudan Human Rights Network and Darfurian Refugee in Baltimore.
Jonathan Loeb, Fellow at Human Rights Watch, researcher on Sudan and author of the February 2015 report, “Mass Rape in Darfur,” will discuss the human rights violations taking place in the region.
Khalid Kodi, Sudanese American artist and educator, will discuss experience in the Nuba Mountains and Blue Nile, working with the victims of human rights violations through art.
Daniel Rothbart, professor of conflict analysis and resolution at the School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, George Mason University, will discuss the importance of both recognizing human rights violations and the solutions relating to conflict resolution.
