There has been a change in the S-CAR volunteer location for the MLK Volunteer Day. City Year had a tremendous amount of response to their project at the project school, and as of last Thursday was unable to accommodate our group.
The new location for our project is the Marvin Gaye Park Community Greening Center. This is a great opportunity for us to work with a grassroots organization committed to creating opportunities and green space in a DC community (and the weather will be warmer!). Date: Monday, January 20
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (volunteers may leave earlier if necessary)
Location: Marvin Gaye Community Greening Center, 5000 block of Nannie Helen Burroughts Avenue, NE, Washington DC 20019 (directly in front of Deanwood Rehabilitation & Wellness Center)

Transportation
Unfortunately, this site is not accessible via the Metro rail system, though there are several bus stops in the area.
Lisa Shaw can take four additional people in her car, and is willing to meet people at the Arlington campus, Founders Hall on the main floor by the information desk at 8:30 a.m. for those who may want a ride. Please text Lisa Shaw at 404-435-8511 if you need a ride, or are also willing to carpool (please include your name and number of people in the text!)
It is suggest that for those that are driving, that you park on 5Oth or 51st street. Please check in with Lisa when you arrive – she will be wearing a yellow sweatshirt and a black jacket.
Also, please email Lisa Shaw by 9:00 p.m. Sunday evening to let her know that you will be coming to the project so that I can give an accurate account to the project leader.
Project Details:
• Weed and add soil to raised garden beds
• Remove debris/rubbish from site and surrounding park lands
• Install hoop house and plant cold weather crops
• Remove invasive underbrush
• Organize tools and complete inventory
• Spread wood chips on trails (if available)
• Make signage for vegetable beds, bee hives, rain barrels, trail, tree names for nursery, tree names for planted trees, etc.
• Paint the community board (weather depending)
• Complete painting the front of the storage container (weather depending)
• Organize shed into office space
• Move nursery trees to accommodate expanding gardens
What To Wear / Bring:
• Clothes that can get a dirty! Suggested that you dress in layers; morning may start off cold but temperature will warm up throughout day.
• Closed toed shoes that may also get dirty – no sandals!
• Work gloves
• Lunches and snacks
• Water
• Hats
• Sunscreen
