PURPOSE
We want to help S-CAR students get the job they're looking for. So we are offering an intensive career training process that is specifically tailored to S-CAR students who are interested in the NGO career path. This career intensive process will help S-CAR students articulate how the conflict resolution field is applicable to this field and careers, and prepare them for the resume, application, and interview process.
PROCESS
There are a few steps that make up the Career Intensive process.
The first step is recruiting students for the event. Over the weeks leading up to the Intensive, students will submit their resumes for review to Jackie Finch, S-CAR Career Advisor. She will look over their resumes and advise them as needed. Students must sign up for this event with her because there is a 15 person limit!
The next step is for students to prepare their resumes and cover letters for one of the few job postings that will be sent out. Each of these jobs is geared towards a career focus in the area of NGO’s. There may be a few questions they should prepare for regarding the interview for that particular job.
The third step will happen Friday morning at 10 AM. Students will be bringing in resumes and cover letters to be reviewed by their peers. We will also explore the job search and professional development.
The next step will be the afternoon session. After lunch, there will be a discussion, which will begin with a panel of employer’s that will discuss their professional experiences and development of their career paths. The floor will open up to a Question and Answer session. After this, students will be divided into groups. Each Panelist will sit down with a group and conduct mock interviews for the particular job. This will be time for students to exercise their interviewing skills and get solid, constructive feedback.
A few questions that will be commonly asked in such an interview:
How is your education relevant to the job you are applying for?
What experience do you have that is relevant for this position?
Why are you interested in a career working for a NGO?
What are your strengths and weaknesses?
