Biography

My name is Yuji Uesugi at SILS (PhD. in International Conflict Analysis). My major is international security studies, conflict resolution and peacecbuilding. I have conducted research on the theme of international peace operations, mainly focusing on efforts by the United Nations.

I have examined various conflict resolution processes and post-conflict peacebuilding endeavors in Timor-Lestet, Afghanistan, Cambodia and etc. Throughout my career, I have tried to carry out research that has direct and significant relevance to the practice of conflict resolution and peacebuilding.

Before coming to SILS, I was a faculty member of the Graduate School for International Development and Cooperation (IDEC) at Hiroshima University where I undertook some researches together with students from post-conflict areas. Also, I was assigned as an international electoral observer in Timor-Leste by the International Peace Cooperation Headquarters of the Japanese Cabinet Office. In addition, through the work of the Hiroshima Peacebuilders Center (HPC), I have engaged in a human resource development program that was commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. Through this program which aims to assist young professionals who seek to develop their career in the field of peacebuilding, I was able to train over 200 promising experts from both Japan and the rest of Asia, who now work in the professional field of peacebuilding.

Back in 2002, I played an instrumental role in the establishment of a NGO called the Okinawa Peace Assistance Center (OPAC), and have involved in its activities in the area of research, human resource development and peace related activitie
