The current case against Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani could have been bolstered in 2007 when the F.B.I. came to visit him at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.
Mr. Ghailani, an accused terrorist whose civilian trial begins on Wednesday, had previously been held in a so-called black site run by the C.I.A., where, he later claimed, he was subjected to cruel interrogation techniques.
