Significant events: Massacre of 9 Municipal Council members took place on 27 February, 2006 (shortly after a visit by a CSN delegation) by a group of assassins identified by local people as members of FARC. Since this event the security forces’ presence in Rivera has been intensified and harassment of local citizens – accused of being guerrilla supporters – markedly increased.
