Governor’s office: In April 2002 the municipio was the scene of the kidnapping by FARC of the Governor of Antioquia, Guillermo Gaviria [elected in 2000] and his peace advisor, Gilberto Echeverri Meija., a former Minister of Defence. Both were involved in a peace march for non-violence & reconciliation from Medellin to Caicedo when the kidnapping took place. In May 2003 both were killed, together with 8 other captives, in an abortive rescue attempt by Colombian troops, against which Gaviria had constantly warned.
