Valued goods produced in region: majpr crops include coffee, plantains and bananas. Armenia is also a major center for conferences and eco-tourism, especially to Los Nevados National Park in the north of the municipio.

Significant events: Armenia and the surrounding region lie in an earthquake prone area. On Jan. 25 1999 a major earthquake hit the town, killing well over 1,000 people, destroying two thirds of the buildings and rendering over 200,000 homeless. Since then international aid has helped rebuild the city, including new highways and government buildings.
