Gerges argues that the principle of unintended consequences has been operative in U.S. foreign policies both before and after 9/11, generating self-defeating outcomes that became springboards for further counterproductive policies.This indictment includes: U.S. support for Osama bin Laden during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, assisting him to eventually become the creator and spiritual head of an entity whose members perpetrated 9/11;
