This service learning field experience is open to all S-CAR students (Undergraduate juniors and seniors, Master's, PhD, and Certificate) as well as students from other George Mason University departments and neighboring universities.
This service learning field experience requires a four-step application process:
Step One: Online Application and Travel Forms
Students desiring to participate in this service learning field experience must:
- Complete the online The Kenya Service Learning Field Experience Application

AND - Bring the following completed forms to the Nathanael Lash, Field Experience Coordinator, or Lisa Shaw, Director of Field Experience, at Northeast Module II by Friday, April 18, 2014.
- Application for Field Studies Course
- Acknowledgement of Risk Medical Consent
- International Travel Advisory, Assumption of Risk
Step Two: Pre-trip Interview
• All students who apply for this service learning field experience will be required to participate in a pre-trip interview. After applying, students will be contacted directly by the Amani Institute to set up a virtual interview. These interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis and are part of the selection process.
• The final student roster will be determined after the interview process has been completed. Students will be notified no later than May 3, 2014.
Step Three: Individual Course Registration
• All students who complete the application and travel forms for this service learning field experience and are placed on the final student roster following pre-trip interviews will be sent an Individual Course Registration form which they will need to complete and return to the S-CAR Office of Field Experience via email.
Step Four: Payment
• Payment for international trips are now processed through Student Accounts. A non-refundable deposit of $500 is required to reserve a place in the course. This deposit will go toward the cost of the trip. This deposit will be due within 5 days of student selection.
• Mason financial aid (Summer Dispersement) may be used toward this trip. You should contact your financial aid advisor and explain that you will be enrolling in this particular course.
This service learning field experience trip requires a five-step application process:
Step One: Quick-Admission to George Mason University
• Non-Mason students desiring to participate in this field experience trip must be admitted to George Mason through a Quick-Admit process. Students MUST forward an official or unofficial copy of their transcripts from their current college or university as well as the following completed forms to the Director of Field Experience, Lisa Shaw at [email protected].
- Non-Degree Course Enrollment Form
- Quick Admit Transcript and VA Domicile Tuition Form (Complete the VA Domicile Form whether you live in Virginia or not. If you are a permanent resident of Virginia, please fill out the entire form. If you do not live in Virginia, fill out the top portion only of the first page, sign the top of the second page, and write "Not Applicable" on the rest of the form)

Step Five: Payment
• In order for students who do not have a student account set up and to secure a place on the trip roster, they must pay their deposit by mailing a $500 check made payable to "George Mason University" to Greg Justice at the Center for Field Studies. This allows the non GMU students to apply for and reserve a seat at the same time as GMU students can. The check will be held by George Mason until the student is given a Mason Student Account at which time the $500 check will be deposited into the student's account.
• If a student’s records have not been received by GMU admissions they will not be allowed to enroll in the class.
• Once the student's transcripts arrive and all necessary forms completed, the student's will receive a G# and will be enrolled in the course. Payment will be processed through their new Student Account.
