Objectives

The purpose of the service learning field experience in Kenya is to engage students in learning, professional practice, skill building, and self-development. In order to achieve these objectives, students will work with local community partners.

Student Development Objectives:

  • Gain experience working with local partners and communities while understanding their needs.
  • Develop a greater understanding of how social change actually happens in the field.
  •  Advance their understanding of conflicts that affect the community in Nairobi.
  •  Develop conflict resolution approaches and techniques.
  •  Learn professional skills essential for long-term success.
  •  Build new, globally connected networks in their areas of interest.
  •  Increase confidence in their own abilities and role as agents of change.

 Service Objectives in Nairobi Communities:

  •  Engage community members in research, training, and practice of conflict resolution.
  • Develop processes and approaches to productively resolve conflicts in the Kenyan context.
  • Collaborate with local partners to understand needs, interests, and values in the community context.
