Significant events: In January 2001 two major massacres of campesinos took place between Guatape and El Penol, the first of 11 people carried out by paramilitaries of the AUC and a second two days later by “persons unknown”. At that time the region was the scene of fighting between FARC and the AUC.
Further comments: Municipio was once home of Pablo Escobar; following his death both guerrillas and paramilitaries operated in the area. It was one of REDEPAZ’s “100 Municipios” and a member of the Asamblea of Eastern Antioquia.
